Colorful DIY Sesame Street Birthday Party
Amber of Amber V Photgraphy hand made this entire Colorful Sesame Street Birthday Party for her son Eli! She crafted an amazing party (with a little help from mom!), from the cute character cupcakes and “Hoopers Store” to the outdoor games, dessert table backdrop and tons more! (For more Sesame Street Party Ideas go here!)
PARTY HIGHLIGHTS to look out for:
- Ernie’s Bubble Bath, Oscar’s Garbage Toss and Zoe’s Dance Floor
- Grovers “Juice Up” Station: blue juice with capes, red stripe straws & “Super Juice” labels
- Oscar, Elmo & Cookie Monster Favors
- Abby Cadabby’s Magic Wands, Big Birds Egg Casserole + Elmo’s Goldfish
- Sesame Street Sign, Oscars Trash Can & Carboard painted Elmo for a themed photo booth!
PARTY DETAILS, as told by Amber…
This Party is completely DIY. We hand-made everything. It was an absolute labor of love by my mom and me!
I wanted something fun and punchy for the backdrop. I thought about all the cheap frames I had gotten from garage sales and stored in the garage. I threw a little red spray paint on a few of them and printed out some fun prints to go inside. I added little fabric bunting and tissue paper pom poms and I had myself a backdrop that truly celebrated my birthday boy. I decorated the cake with buttercream and fondant, as well as the character cupcakes.
Each of the foods served were associated with a specific Sesame Street character. But I think the drinks may have been my favorite! “Juice up” with Grover’s Super Juice. Who doesn’t want a drink with a cape?
Elmo was at the door to welcome all the guests to Sesame Street. And there were lots of fun games and activities to keep the guests busy, including a cardboard “Hooper’s Store” where the children could put on puppet shows.
To say thank you, each guest got to choose a cup with their favorite character and a few goodies inside.

Looks like a great theme! The best parties are always centred around a theme and hold the whole day together.

I absolutely loved it ! Where did you get the Grover juice bottle?
Thank you so much Brenda! I handmade juice bottles. I printed labels onto adhesive paper and attached them to the bottles. I also cut the capes out of felt and made cut out the Super Grover emblem with my silhouette machine.
This Colorful DIY Sesame street party is so adorable !! and those cupcakes are too cute to eat. but what i liked most is the birthday cake. Looks yummy !!
I love that Seasme Street cake. My kids would die if they had one of these for their birthday
Loved the whole theme. My son’s 1st birthday is at the end of this month and it’s also Sesame Street. You saved me with the Super Grover table as I didn’t know what to do with Grover! LOL! However, I wanted to ask you where you bought the blue juice bottles? BJ’s? Costco? :)
Sorry to just be responding. The bottle are repurposed soda bottles. I just made blue Kool-aid and poured it into the bottles using a funnel. Thanks!!
Such original ideas!! Where did you find the metal garbage can with lid? I’m looking for something exactly like that for my son’s birthday party.
Thank you Kelli! The trash cans can be found at home improvement store, like Home Depot or Lowes
How did you get the icing so red? I want to make my son’s “Elmo” cupcakes and I’m stumped on how to get the icing the proper Elmo red. ;)
Such a cute party!!! Where did you find the blue solo cups for Cookie Monster? That color is perfect shade but I haven’t seen them. Great job :)
I’m guessing you made the favor cups and the cookie monster cups. Did you purchase they eyes and mouths or did you just cut them out yourself?
I absolutely love your theme and I know my daughter would too. I am contemplating diy birthday theme or buying supplies. I am now inspired from your diy sesame street theme. can I ask you how long it took you to do all the work?
Adorable! Where did the puppets come from?
Where did you get the street lamp post sign from. I really like that idea.
I love everything! But how did you do the cups? Did you cut out each face? Are they stickers?
Awesome post! These ideas are great! I especially love Grover’s juice-up station and Ernie’s bubble bath. Super cool!
